   Sending sad condolences to Gerlof’s many friends in this difficult time. It is hard to say goodbye. It can help to share memories.

   Ger was very generous. I only knew him through email. He sent me information related to our common research into Anne Frank’s short life, often going on tangents. When I shared a discovery or observation, he typically responded in detail. Very often, he graciously said it was “most interesting.” Also, he responded in English: very gracious and super-kind.

   I know he also had interests in bicycles, ham radio, and buying second-hand memorabilia. If you google his name, there are several old bicycle photos: he is credited for identifying the type of bicycles and their gear.

   I looked forward to retirement for further correspondence and joint research with him, but that dream will not happen. He had sent me a lot of Anne Frank-related information — too much to sit down with in detail while in a full-time job.

   We discussed other things, such as workplace conflict — I loved his phrase for it: “stupid little wars.” He shared his involvement with Anne Frank events and his worries about the safety of the students at his neighboring Jewish school.

   His final illness and problems were awful. But he still travelled by bike to get medical care! It seems the doctors did not realize how ill he was. They said he likely had 7-10 years — the reality was only about one year.

   It has been a sad shock to learn of his death.

   Thank you, thank you for everything, dear Gerlof!
